Small Steps to Becoming a Morning Person

Now that I'm back at university and somewhat settled in - it definitely hasn't quite kicked in yet that this will in fact be my forth and final year - I've realised I need to be far more conscious of time: how long I spend watching reality TV as opposed to going to lectures and actually studying. Don't get me wrong, I get sh*t done, but over the years I have definitely become lazy when it comes to my daily routine. I usually wake up to my alarm and repeatedly hit the snooze button - onto a negative start - make my way to the bathroom to freshen up, get dressed and if I have the time I'll have a bowl of cereal before I head out the door. This doesn't sound like a great morning routine does it? Definitely not GRWM-worthy, right?

After a morning spent with Tempur I decided it's time to get rid of my bad habits and here's how I'll be doing that...

1. Stop pressing snooze

This is something I do constantly and it's just so bad! It's of those things that I know isn't beneficial in any way but I can't help myself hitting snooze in the mornings when I just don't want to get up. I'm going to try different ways to stop this bad habit, at the moment I'm thinking about leaving my phone far away from me so I'll be forced to get up to turn it off (although I'm worried about ending up pretty grumpy afterwards!) Let me know if you have any tips!

2. Let in natural daylight

You've probably heard of the lumie light which is meant to help regulate your natural body clock by gradually lighting up a room, depending on whichever time you've put in, but a more cost-effective way is to simply use natural daylight. Whether you have curtains or blinds, it can be as easy as leaving a small gap between them and your window allowing natural light to seep through in the mornings. I've moved into my uni place which has the worst blinds ever so it's near enough impossible for me to prevent the light from coming in in the mornings, meaning I've been going to sleep too late and waking up early, so a good night's sleep has become imperative.

3. Switch off from technology

Easier said than done. That's the first thing I'll say but it's something I strive towards. Granted, I don't think I'll be able to switch off from all forms of technology but I'm going to try and implement this gradually. Starting by switching off my laptop by 10PM and my phone half an hour later. In an ideal world I'd be going to sleep by 11PM so I'm hoping the half an hour between I can wind down by reading a book or having a bit of a pamper before heading to bed.

4. Get a good night's sleep

Not forgetting a good night's sleep, which is essential for waking up refreshed and filled with energy; after trying out the hybrid mattress I can appreciate just how important a good mattress is and how it can play such a huge part in your sleeping pattern and subsequently, your morning routine.

What are your tips for becoming a morning person?

  1. As soon as I come home from work, I get into my pjs & cleanse my face and do my normal morning & night routine of cleansing & moisturising. Then do some blogging work. I tend to turn my laptop off at least an hour before I go to bed. Watch a bit of Netflix and turn my phone of 20-30 minutes before I go to sleep. I then like to read my book or magazine that j have next to my bed. I try to sleep between 9:30 & 10:30 due to me having early starts and needing 8-9 hours sleep or I just won't function properly throughout the day. Hope this helps!

    1. I love getting into cosy clothes as soon as I'm done for the day too! I'm a bit lazier when it comes to taking off my makeup though, I usually only get round to that before heading for bed. That's so good of you to sleep that early, I wish I could! I've been struggling with going to sleep earlier but I'm hoping these tips will help X

  3. This is such a lovely post! I am not a morning person at all, and I snooze at least 4 times! Because it's getting darker in the morning again during the winter time, I bought myself a wake up light so I have some sort of light coming into my room and I found that it really helps me wake up in the morning! :) xx
